Why are you sad?

So, this kinda tricky situation came up: I was standing there, being my sorrowful self, and a mother with her child comes to ask "Why are you sad?"

To all the sad clowns out there and anyone who can think up something, what would ya respond?
Do keep in mind that it is my personal rule that I do not speak much while in make-up; I only do mutter one or two words at the time sometimes, but that's it.

Character development.... If your character is sorrowful, why? What is your backstory? I assume you are at an event where there are lots of families and people having fun. Maybe you are sad because nobody invited you to go on a ride, sit next to them, share a bit of their funnel cake. Maybe, you remember going to a carnival with your father, uncle, grandfather, etc. and wish they were here to enjoy the fun.
