The two best very best books that form the foundation and seat of learning for all who have an interest mentalism have both been separately mentioned.

Corinda's "13 Steps to Mentalism" and Theodore Annemann's "Practical Mental Magic".

These two books combined, contain everything you would wish to know on the subject. There is nothing new in the routines of current crop of practitioners in this field, such as Max Maven and Derren Brown, that was not first written about in these two books. If you were to ask Derren Brown as I have done, these are his two top recommendations. He readily admits that all he has done is add a contemporary twist to the old effects contained in these two books, to entertain the modern audience.

There is a tendency with much of the contemporary magical teaching and training aids to teach well a few simple effects and routines. Master them and you will appear amazing and have the ability to entertain. But outside of those tricks, you will have very little else. These two books require much more investment in time and effort to learn, than some DVD. Once done so however, you will have the ability to not only perform amazing feats but the tools to create your own modern effects.
