Traditionally there are 3 major types of clown: Whiteface, Auguste, Tramp/Hobo.

I guess Hobo falls into a "character clown" type where essentially your clown plays dress up and can be (cop, firefighter, cowboy, etc) but I tend to feel that the tramp deserves his own heading.

Think Bozo or Ronald McDonald as your whiteface. Here on the forum, "Sir Tooney Van Dykes" portrays a Whiteface look.

Tim and "Fitzwilly" paint up as your Auguste.

Suitcase Sam, Scruffy and myself wear tramps as our guise.

I've found that it's difficult to say "I want to be this type of clown." Usually, your clown will find you rather than the other way around. Play around with some makeup and put on different types of faces - eventually you'll find one that fits you and you can go from there.
